Android apps that work on every device your users have
Android powers the majority of smartphones worldwide and a large share in Egypt, across a huge variety of brands, screen sizes, prices and operating system versions. That variety is Android’s strength, because it reaches everyone, and its challenge: an app must perform well on a flagship Samsung and an older budget phone, on tablets, and sometimes on rugged handheld devices used in warehouses and field work.
Android is also the platform of choice for many business uses: delivery drivers, warehouse scanners, point-of-sale terminals, kiosks and field service tablets. These apps need offline mode, hardware integration, battery efficiency and device management.
ITZone is an Android app development company in Cairo building native and cross-platform Android apps for consumers and businesses. Our Android app developers use modern tools such as Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, test across a wide range of devices, and handle Google Play publishing and ongoing updates.

How to make an Android app: the steps
1. Define the app’s purpose and the users it serves.
2. Design the experience with wireframes and prototypes, following Material Design guidance.
3. Choose native Kotlin or cross-platform.
4. Set up a Google Play developer account under your company.
5. Develop the app in Android Studio with the back-end and APIs it needs.
6. Test on many devices and Android versions, including internal and closed testing tracks.
7. Prepare the Play Store listing: screenshots, description, content rating and data safety section.
8. Publish and monitor crashes, performance and reviews.
9. Update regularly to meet Google Play’s target API requirements and add features.
Kotlin vs Java for Android development
Java was the original language for Android apps and still runs many older apps. Kotlin is a modern language that Google has recommended as the preferred language for Android development since 2019. Kotlin is more concise, safer against common errors such as null pointer crashes, and works with Jetpack Compose, Android’s modern UI toolkit. Kotlin and Java can coexist in the same project, which makes gradual migration possible.
| Java | Kotlin | |
|---|---|---|
| Status for Android | Supported, legacy | Google’s preferred language |
| Code length | Longer | More concise |
| Null safety | Manual | Built in |
| Modern UI (Jetpack Compose) | Not designed for it | Designed for it |
| Best for | Maintaining older apps | New apps and modernisation |
Google Play publishing
Publishing on Google Play requires a developer account, a complete store listing, a data safety section describing data collection, a content rating and compliance with Google Play policies. Google also requires apps to target recent Android API levels, so older apps must be updated periodically to remain available to new users. New developer accounts may also need to complete testing requirements before production release. We manage the entire process and keep your app compliant.
How we test Android apps
Android’s variety means testing matters more than on any other platform. We test on a matrix of real devices covering popular brands, screen sizes, Android versions and performance levels, plus emulators for wider coverage. Automated tests check core journeys on every build, and we test specific scenarios such as low memory, poor connectivity, battery saver mode, permission changes and screen rotation. Crash and performance monitoring after release catches device-specific issues quickly. See Software Testing & QA
Performance and battery efficiency
Users uninstall apps that drain batteries or feel sluggish. We optimise start-up time, use background work carefully with Android’s WorkManager, minimise network calls, compress images, and avoid unnecessary wake-ups. For field apps that run all day, we pay special attention to location tracking and sync strategies so devices last a full shift.
Android security
We store sensitive data with the Android Keystore, encrypt network traffic, protect APIs with secure authentication, obfuscate code in release builds, request only the permissions an app truly needs, and follow OWASP mobile security guidance. Business apps can be distributed and managed through Android Enterprise and device management solutions, with work profiles separating company data on personal devices.
Who needs Android app development
Logistics and delivery companies, retailers and restaurants, field service and maintenance businesses, healthcare providers, startups targeting broad audiences across Egypt and region, and any business whose customers or staff use a wide range of Android devices.
Choosing an Android app development company
Ask to see published apps and check their Play Store ratings. Ask about device testing, offline support, hardware integration experience and how they keep apps compliant with Google Play policies. Confirm that the app will be published under your account and that you’ll own the code.
Material Design and Android UX
Google’s Material Design system describes how Android apps should look and behave: navigation patterns, components, motion, typography and accessibility. Apps that follow it feel natural to Android users and adapt well to different screen sizes, including foldables and tablets. We combine Material Design with your brand, support dark theme, dynamic text sizes and TalkBack accessibility, and implement proper right-to-left layouts for Arabic.

Distributing apps to staff
Business apps for drivers, technicians or store staff often shouldn’t be on the public Play Store. Through Android Enterprise and managed Google Play, apps can be published privately to your organisation and installed automatically on company devices, with settings and updates controlled centrally. We set this up together with your device management solution.
Case study
An Egyptian delivery company replaced paper delivery notes with an Android driver app featuring offline mode, barcode scanning, photo proof of delivery and live tracking.
Android App Development questions, answered
How do I make an Android app?
Define the purpose, design the experience, choose native or cross-platform, develop and test on many devices, then publish on Google Play and update regularly.
Kotlin or Java: which is better?
Kotlin is Google’s preferred language for new Android apps; Java remains in many older apps and can be migrated gradually.
Can you hire Android developers for our team?
Yes, through dedicated developers or team augmentation. See IT Staff Augmentation
Will the app work on older phones?
We set a minimum Android version based on your audience and test on a range of devices.
Can Android apps work offline?
Yes. Offline-first apps store data locally and sync when connected.
Can you build for rugged devices and scanners?
Yes, including integration with built-in barcode scanners and printers.
Who owns the app?
You do. It’s published under your Google Play developer account.
Can you update our old Java app?
Yes. We can modernise it to Kotlin gradually while keeping it running for users.
Do you build Android TV or Wear OS apps?
Yes, where they suit your product.
Can we roll out the app gradually?
Yes. Google Play staged rollouts release updates to a percentage of users first, reducing risk.
Do you provide app maintenance?
Yes. Support plans cover Android version updates, Google Play policy changes, fixes and new features.
Can the app integrate with our ERP?
Yes, through secure APIs to Odoo, Dynamics 365 and other systems.
Can the app be bilingual?
Yes, Arabic and English with right-to-left support.
