Your devices are where attacks land
Almost every cyber attack eventually reaches an endpoint: a laptop where a phishing attachment is opened, a server where an attacker runs commands, a desktop where ransomware starts encrypting files. With staff working from offices, homes, airports and client sites, endpoints are also the part of your network you control least.
Traditional antivirus was built to catch known malware by its signature. Modern attackers avoid that: they use new malware variants, legitimate admin tools, scripts and stolen credentials that antivirus doesn’t recognise as malicious. That’s why many ransomware victims had antivirus installed.
Endpoint detection and response (EDR) is the modern answer. EDR watches what happens on each device, such as processes, file changes, network connections and user behaviour, detects suspicious patterns, and lets defenders investigate and stop attacks, for example by isolating a device from the network in seconds. ITZone deploys, configures and manages EDR for Egyptian businesses, and can monitor it 24/7 through our SOC.

What is endpoint security?
Endpoint security is the protection of devices that connect to your network, called endpoints, against cyber threats. Endpoints include laptops, desktops, servers, smartphones, tablets and, increasingly, IoT devices. Endpoint security combines several technologies: antivirus to block malware, EDR to detect and respond to advanced attacks, firewalls on the device, encryption, device control, and management tools that keep devices updated and configured securely.
What is EDR?
EDR stands for Endpoint Detection and Response. It’s security software that continuously monitors endpoint activity, detects threats that traditional antivirus misses, and gives security teams the tools to investigate and respond. Where antivirus asks “is this file known to be bad?”, EDR asks “is this behaviour suspicious?”, for example a Word document launching PowerShell, or a process suddenly encrypting hundreds of files.
Antivirus vs EDR vs XDR vs MDR
| What it is | Who responds | |
|---|---|---|
| Antivirus | Blocks known malware | Automatic |
| EDR | Detects suspicious behaviour, records activity, enables response | Your team or provider |
| XDR | EDR extended with email, identity, cloud and network data | Your team or provider |
| MDR | A managed service where experts monitor and respond using EDR/XDR | The provider, 24/7 |
For most Egyptian businesses, the best value is EDR managed by experts, which is effectively MDR.
Antivirus for business: why free tools aren’t enough
Consumer and free antivirus products lack central management, so nobody knows whether every device is protected and up to date. They don’t provide EDR capabilities, investigation tools or isolation. They don’t report to a central console or a SOC. And their licences often don’t permit business use. Business endpoint protection gives you visibility and control over every device.

How to choose endpoint security
Check independent test results for detection and false positives, how lightweight the agent is, operating system coverage, ease of management, and integration with your other tools. If you use Microsoft 365 Business Premium, Defender for Business may already be included in your licences. Most importantly, decide who will respond to alerts: the best EDR is wasted if nobody acts on what it finds.
Endpoint security best practices
Protect every device, including servers and Macs. Enable tamper protection so attackers can’t switch it off. Keep operating systems and applications patched. Remove local admin rights from everyday users. Encrypt laptops. Use device management (such as Intune) to enforce settings. Back up important data and protect backups from ransomware. Review alerts daily or use a managed service.
How EDR stops a ransomware attack
A typical ransomware attack unfolds in stages. A user opens a malicious attachment, which runs a script. The script downloads tools, steals credentials and moves to other machines. Days later, the attacker disables security tools, deletes backups and starts encrypting files. EDR can interrupt each stage: blocking the script, flagging credential theft tools, detecting unusual remote logins, preventing tampering with security settings, and spotting mass file encryption within seconds. When a device is isolated early, the attack stays contained to one machine instead of spreading across the business.
Mobile devices and device management
Phones and tablets now hold email, files and business apps, so they need protection too. Mobile threat defence detects risky apps, malicious links and compromised devices. Device management tools such as Microsoft Intune enforce passcodes and encryption, separate work and personal data, and let you wipe company data from a lost or departing employee’s device without touching personal photos. We include mobile devices in your endpoint security plan.
Servers need protection too
Servers hold your most valuable data and are prime targets once attackers get inside. We deploy server-grade protection with appropriate exclusions for databases and business applications, monitor server activity closely, and alert on risky behaviour such as new admin accounts or remote execution tools.
Who needs EDR
Every business with sensitive data, remote staff or regulatory obligations. It’s especially important for finance, healthcare, logistics, professional services and any company that has been targeted by phishing or ransomware before. Many cyber insurers now expect EDR as a condition of cover.
Reporting
Monthly reports show protected devices, threats blocked and investigated, devices missing updates or protection, risky applications and recommended actions, giving management and auditors a clear view of endpoint risk.
Case study
A clinic group replaced legacy antivirus with managed EDR. Two months later, EDR detected a malicious script from a phishing attachment; our SOC isolated the laptop within minutes, preventing spread.
Endpoint Security questions, answered
What is endpoint security?
Protecting laptops, desktops, servers and mobile devices against cyber threats using antivirus, EDR, encryption and device management.
What is EDR?
Endpoint Detection and Response: software that detects suspicious behaviour on devices and lets defenders investigate and respond.
Is antivirus enough for a business?
No. Modern attacks often bypass traditional antivirus. EDR, ideally monitored by experts, is now the recommended baseline.
Which EDR do you recommend?
It depends on your environment. Microsoft Defender suits Microsoft 365 businesses; CrowdStrike and Sophos are strong alternatives. We recommend after assessment.
Will EDR slow down our computers?
Modern EDR agents are lightweight; most users notice no difference.
Can you protect Macs and mobile phones?
Yes, with platforms that support macOS, iOS and Android.
How long does deployment take?
Usually a few days for most businesses, deployed remotely.
Do you monitor EDR alerts 24/7?
Yes, through our Managed SOC service.
What happens to our old antivirus?
We remove it cleanly during deployment to avoid conflicts.
Does EDR work when laptops are off the office network?
Yes. Cloud-managed EDR protects and reports wherever the device connects to the internet.
Can EDR help after an attack has happened?
Yes. EDR’s activity records help investigators understand how an attack happened and which devices were affected.
Do you support Linux servers?
Yes, with platforms that support major Linux distributions.
Can users switch off the protection?
No. Tamper protection prevents users, and attackers, from disabling or uninstalling the agent.
Do you help with cyber insurance questionnaires?
Yes. We provide details of your endpoint protection and monitoring for insurer questionnaires.
Is endpoint security included in your IT AMC?
Basic protection checks are part of IT AMC; full managed EDR with monitoring is a separate security service.
