About Sophos

What is Sophos?

Sophos is a global cyber security company, founded in the UK, that provides firewalls, endpoint protection, email security, cloud security and managed detection and response. It’s especially popular with small and mid-size businesses because its products are managed together through a single cloud platform, Sophos Central, and designed to share information so threats can be stopped automatically across devices and the network.

Sophos Firewall

Sophos Firewall, running on XGS series appliances or as a virtual and cloud firewall, combines next-generation firewall features with practical tools for smaller IT teams. It includes deep packet inspection, intrusion prevention, web and application control, sandboxing of suspicious files, site-to-site and remote access VPN, SD-WAN, and clear reporting. Because it’s managed in Sophos Central alongside endpoints, administrators can see network and device security in one place.

Sophos Intercept X endpoint protection

Intercept X is Sophos’s endpoint protection for Windows, macOS and servers. It combines deep-learning malware detection, exploit prevention, and anti-ransomware technology designed to detect malicious encryption and roll affected files back. Adding XDR capabilities gives analysts the ability to investigate and respond across devices. Intercept X is managed centrally in Sophos Central, so policies apply consistently wherever devices are.

How Sophos products work together

A key Sophos idea is that products should share information automatically. When Intercept X detects a threat on a laptop, Sophos Firewall can be informed and isolate that device from the rest of the network until it’s cleaned. The firewall can also identify which applications are generating traffic, even if they’re unknown, because the endpoint shares that information. This coordination reduces the time between detection and containment, which matters most in ransomware attacks.

Is Sophos right for you?

Good fit if…

  • You want firewall and endpoint managed in one cloud console
  • You’re an SME or mid-size business with a small IT team
  • You want anti-ransomware features and optional MDR

Consider alternatives if…

  • You’re standardising on Microsoft Defender through Microsoft 365 licences
  • You have a large, complex network built on another firewall vendor
  • You need very specialised network features

How we work

  1. Assessment

Current firewall and endpoint tools, network and devices.

  2. Design

Firewall placement and policies, endpoint policies and exclusions.

  3. Deploy

Firewall installed in a planned cut-over; Intercept X rolled out remotely, old antivirus removed.

  4. Tune

Alerts and policies adjusted to your environment.

  5. Manage

    Monitoring, updates, reviews and reporting.

Sophos MDR or our SOC?

Sophos offers its own MDR service, where Sophos analysts monitor and respond using Sophos tools. ITZone’s Managed SOC can monitor Sophos alongside other systems, such as Microsoft 365 and non-Sophos devices. We’ll help you choose: Sophos MDR suits environments built mainly on Sophos; our SOC suits mixed environments or when you want one local provider responsible for everything.

Keeping Sophos secure

We apply Sophos firmware and endpoint updates promptly, enforce tamper protection so attackers can’t disable Intercept X, restrict firewall admin access and use MFA, review policies regularly, and monitor licence renewals so protection never lapses.

Who uses Sophos

SMEs and mid-size businesses, schools, clinics, retail chains, professional firms and organisations with lean IT teams that want strong protection without complex management.

Migrating to Sophos

Moving from another firewall or antivirus to Sophos is straightforward when planned. For firewalls, we document existing rules, NAT, VPNs and routing, clean up unused rules, rebuild policies on Sophos Firewall following best practice, and cut over outside working hours with a rollback plan. For endpoints, we deploy Intercept X in groups, remove the old product cleanly to avoid conflicts, and confirm every device reports to Sophos Central before closing the project.

Sophos Central explained

Sophos Central is the cloud console where all Sophos products are managed. Administrators see alerts, device health, firewall status and reports in one place, apply policies to groups of users and devices, and manage everything from a browser without on-premise servers. For multi-site organisations or managed service providers, Central makes it easy to keep policies consistent across locations.

Licensing and renewals

Sophos products are licensed by subscription, with firewall protection bundles and endpoint licences renewed periodically. If subscriptions lapse, protection features stop updating. As part of managed support, we track your licences and renewal dates and remind you well in advance.

Reporting

Monthly reports show threats blocked by the firewall and endpoints, devices with issues, policy changes, web and application usage trends, and recommendations, giving management a clear view of security without logging into consoles.

What you get at handover

Configured and tested firewalls and endpoint policies, documentation of rules and settings, admin access in your company’s name with MFA, a list of licences and renewal dates, and a support plan.

Sophos Firewall best-practice configuration

On every Sophos Firewall we manage, we restrict admin access to trusted networks with MFA, disable unused services, apply intrusion prevention and web protection to all internet traffic, enable TLS inspection where appropriate, use zero-trust or MFA-protected VPN for remote users, segment networks for staff, guests, servers and devices, send logs to monitoring, and back up the configuration after every change. These steps close the most common gaps attackers exploit.

Choosing a Sophos partner

Ask how the partner configures and tunes both firewall and endpoint, how they monitor alerts outside business hours, how quickly they apply firmware updates, and whether they’ll document everything in your name. A good partner treats Sophos as part of your overall security, not just a product sale.

Case study

An education group with several campuses moved to Sophos Firewall and Intercept X managed in Sophos Central. Ransomware attempts are blocked automatically, and IT now manages all sites from one console.
