The padlock your customers look for
Every website today needs HTTPS. Browsers mark sites without it as “Not secure”, search engines favour secure sites, payment providers require it, and customers have learned to look for the padlock before entering any details. An expired or misconfigured certificate is even worse: visitors see a full-page warning and most leave immediately.
SSL certificates, more accurately TLS certificates today, make HTTPS possible. They encrypt the connection between a visitor and your website and confirm the site belongs to who it claims to be. Getting them right means choosing the right type, installing them correctly on every server and service, and renewing them on time, which is getting harder as industry rules shorten how long certificates last.
ITZone supplies, installs and manages SSL certificates for websites, online stores, portals, email servers and applications. We recommend the right validation level, handle the paperwork for business validation, install and test certificates, and automate renewals wherever possible, so your sites never show a security warning.

What is SSL?
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) was the original protocol for encrypting data sent between a browser and a web server. It has since been replaced by the more secure TLS (Transport Layer Security), but the name “SSL” is still widely used. When a site uses HTTPS, its connection is protected by TLS: data such as passwords, form submissions and payment details is encrypted so it can’t be read or altered in transit.
What is an SSL certificate?
An SSL certificate (TLS certificate) is a digital file issued by a trusted certificate authority (CA) that binds a domain name, and sometimes an organisation’s identity, to a cryptographic key. When a browser connects to your site, it checks the certificate to confirm the site is genuine and then uses it to set up an encrypted connection. If the certificate is valid, the browser shows HTTPS and the padlock; if it’s expired, mismatched or untrusted, the browser shows a warning.
Types of SSL certificates
| Type | Validation | What visitors see | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domain Validated (DV) | Proves control of the domain | Padlock | Blogs, small sites, internal tools |
| Organisation Validated (OV) | Verifies the company’s identity | Padlock; company details in certificate | Business websites, portals |
| Extended Validation (EV) | Strictest company verification | Padlock; verified company details in certificate | Banks, e-commerce, high-trust sites |
| Wildcard | Covers a domain and all its first-level subdomains (*.yourcompany.ae) | Padlock | Many subdomains |
| Multi-domain (SAN) | Covers several different domains in one certificate | Padlock | Groups with several brands or domains |
Free certificates (such as Let’s Encrypt, which issues DV certificates) are fine for many sites when renewal is automated. Paid OV and EV certificates add verified business identity and often warranties and support.
Why automated renewal now matters
The industry body that sets rules for publicly trusted certificates has agreed to reduce maximum certificate lifetimes in stages over the coming years, moving towards much shorter validity periods. That means certificates must be renewed far more often than the yearly cycle many businesses are used to. Manual renewals will become impractical and risky. We automate renewal wherever possible and monitor every certificate, so shorter lifetimes don’t cause outages.
How we work

Certificate types and coverage.
-
Validate and issue
Domain and organisation validation completed.
-
Install and test
Certificates installed and configuration tested.
-
Automate and monitor
Renewals automated; expiry alerts in place.

SSL issues we see most often
Expired certificates
Usually because renewals depended on one person’s reminder.
Name mismatch
The certificate doesn’t cover www, a subdomain or an alternative domain.
Incomplete chain
Intermediate certificates missing, causing errors on some devices.
Mixed content
HTTPS pages loading images or scripts over HTTP, breaking the padlock.
Outdated protocols
Old TLS versions or weak ciphers still enabled.
Forgotten services
Certificates on email servers, VPNs, printers or internal apps nobody tracks.
Each can trigger warnings or failed connections, and most are easy to fix with proper inventory and monitoring.
HTTPS and SEO
Search engines treat HTTPS as a positive signal, and browsers flag non-HTTPS pages as not secure, which hurts trust and conversion. When moving a site to HTTPS, redirects must be set correctly, internal links and canonical tags updated, and mixed content removed, so rankings are preserved. We handle this as part of installation.
Who needs SSL management
Every business with a website. It’s especially important for e-commerce, portals with logins, businesses with many domains and subdomains, and organisations with compliance requirements around encryption.
How the padlock actually works
When a visitor opens your site, their browser and your server perform a “handshake”. The server presents its certificate; the browser checks that it was issued by a trusted certificate authority, hasn’t expired, matches the domain and hasn’t been revoked. If all checks pass, both sides agree encryption keys and the session begins. This happens in milliseconds, but if any check fails, the browser stops and shows a warning instead of your site.
Certificate inventory for growing businesses
As businesses grow, certificates spread across websites, staging sites, APIs, VPNs, email servers, load balancers and third-party services, often bought by different people at different times. We build a complete inventory, consolidate where sensible, standardise on automated issuance, and track every certificate with owners and expiry dates. This removes the surprise outages that happen when a forgotten certificate expires.
Choosing an SSL provider
Choose a trusted certificate authority, the right validation level for your audience, and, most importantly, a process for installation and renewal. Certificates themselves are simple; managing them reliably across many systems is where problems happen.
Case study
An Egyptian group with many websites and portals suffered outages from expired certificates. We consolidated certificates, automated renewals and added monitoring.
SSL Certificates questions, answered
What is SSL?
The original encryption protocol for websites, now replaced by TLS, though the name SSL is still commonly used.
What is an SSL certificate?
A digital certificate from a trusted authority that proves a site’s identity and enables encrypted HTTPS connections.
Which SSL certificate do I need?
DV for most simple sites, OV for business sites wanting verified identity, EV for high-trust sites, wildcard for many subdomains, and multi-domain for several domains.
Is a free SSL certificate enough?
For many sites, yes, if renewal is automated. Businesses may prefer OV or EV for verified identity.
Do you install certificates on email servers and applications?
Yes, as well as websites, load balancers and CDNs.
What happens if my certificate expires?
Visitors see a security warning and most will leave. Monitoring and automatic renewal prevent this.
How long does an OV or EV certificate take?
Validation can take from a day to several days, depending on how quickly company details can be verified.
Can one certificate cover all our subdomains?
Yes, a wildcard certificate covers all first-level subdomains of one domain.
Do you support Arabic domain names?
Certificates can be issued for internationalised domain names where supported.
Can you fix "Not secure" warnings on our WordPress site?
Yes. We install the certificate, set HTTPS redirects and fix mixed-content issues.
Do you manage SSL for sites hosted elsewhere?
Yes. We can install and monitor certificates on servers and platforms hosted by other providers.
What is HSTS?
A setting that tells browsers to always use HTTPS for your site, preventing downgrade attacks. We enable it once HTTPS is working everywhere.
